BMI and Weight Loss Q & A
What Is a Body Mass Index?
A body mass index also called a BMI is a measurement tool that medical professionals can use to help determine healthy weight loss goals for patients. A BMI measures the body’s percentage of fat versus its percentage of muscle. Having this information helps our weight loss professionals determine exactly which type of weight loss program will be most effective for you. The BMI is expressed in a number, and the number will reveal whether the person is underweight, at the proper weight, overweight, or obese. A BMI of under 18.5 indicates that a patient is underweight. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 indicates normal weight. A BMI of 25 to 29.9 indicates that the patient is overweight. A BMI of 30 to 39.9 indicates obesity, and a BMI of greater than 40 indicates morbid obesity.
What Other Tests Are Done With a BMI Measurement?
A BMI measurement is one component of an entire body composition analysis for patients at New Vision Weight Loss. After an initial weigh-in and BMI calculation, patients will also be measured in key areas like the hips, chest, and stomach. A basal metabolic rate measurement and a measurement of body fat are also done as part of a body composition analysis.
